Using
Traveroute’s CoPilot is one of the most convenient ways to
transform your Pocket PC it to a full blown GPS, with local maps,
directions, local business location and even has the ability to
detour your route if you are stuck in traffic, due to weather,
constructions or accidents.
My
setup was done with the CF version and a iPAQ 3750
with a dual pcmcia card slot sleeve.
There
are a few steps you must follow to install Pocket CoPilot GPS.
First, you install the software onto your Pocket PC. The install
wizard helps you step by step. I would recommend using at lease a 64
meg storage card for the Pocket CoPilot since it takes over 20MB of
memory when you install the Pocket CoPilot software and the Pocket
Speech software. (If
you do not have a IPAQ, I would recommend getting the Y-cable
version of hardware, unless you have over 32 meg of storage space in
you Pocket PC).
After
you are done with the Pocket PC installation, you need to install
the desktop software. This will give you the US maps, and listing all sorts of useful items. This
software is also, where you make the selection of roads and data
that you want to upload to the Pocket PC for your travels.
You will then have to synchronize your Pocket PC to the
desktop to download data before using the GPS.
The
Users Manual for the program is in a PDF file that is installed on
the Hard Drive at the time of Installation.
Above
is my planned trip from Long Island NY to Las Vegas NV.
The data that will uploaded to the iPAQ will be every thing
in green. This includes
roads, hotels, gas stations, banks, food and other travel info.
The transfer will be done through a wizard in the pc
software. You can also just box out an area that you want or use a
radius option from a set point.
Now
that your data is in your Pocket PC you are ready to go.
Working
on your Pocket PC takes a little getting used to.
First
you have to repack your trip stops as they are not transferred from
the PC to the Pocket PC. This
is done in the planning mode of the software.
You can pick all the stops and save them in you favorites
list.

Once
you have picked all your stops, you switch to the guidance mode for
the driving instructions and the software will nicely direct you on
your trip. Above are
the two views that you will get while in route.
One of the nicest features in the program is the detour
feature that most others do not have; this is done by just a touch
of the screen.
